Machame vs Lemosho: Which Kilimanjaro Route Should You Choose?

At a glance

Machame (the Whiskey Route) is the classic popular camping route. Lemosho approaches from the west, spends more time on the Shira Plateau, and usually feels quieter in the early days. Both join the southern circuit toward Barranco and Barafu.

Scenery

Lemosho wins for remote western forest and Shira views. Machame delivers drama quickly—forest to moorland to Barranco Wall—in a slightly shorter approach.

Crowds

Machame is busier. Lemosho starts quieter, then shares camps with Machame traffic from Barranco onward. If solitude matters early, pick Lemosho.

Success rates & duration

Success tracks duration more than brand name. 7–8 day Lemosho and 7–8 day Machame both perform well. Avoid rushing either into 6 days unless you are very fit and experienced.

Our recommendation

First-time climbers wanting the best balance: 7 or 8-day Lemosho. Social energy and classic status: 7-day Machame. We guide both every season from Moshi.
