Great Migration Month by Month: Where the Herds Are

December to March – calving season

Southern short-grass plains around Ndutu fill with wildebeest giving birth. Predators follow. This is photography gold and less crowded than July river-crossing hype.

April to May – the western push

Herds move toward the Western Corridor and Grumeti. Green season landscapes, dramatic skies, and fewer vehicles.

June to July – building north

Animals mass toward the northern Serengeti. Early crossings can begin depending on rain and river levels.

July to October – Mara River drama

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende area) hosts legendary crocodile-guarded crossings. Nothing is guaranteed—patience and flexible guiding matter more than brochure dates.

November – the return south

Herds begin drifting south with short rains. Excellent shoulder-season value.

How Kilimawe plans migration trips

We design 4–8 day migration safaris that can pivot between central and northern camps based on live conditions—not fixed GPS pins from last year.
